It’s been said that motorists in Ventura County — and all across car-centric Southern California — can’t part with their automobiles. How much of that can be attributed to auto insurance is yet to be seen, although an upcoming ballot measure could change the way people choose to insure themselves, according to supporters and opponents of Proposition 17.

Prop. 17 is a statewide initiative on primary ballots, asking voters to approve changes in the way auto insurers provide discounts to their clients; namely, between those people who’ve maintained continuous coverage, and those who haven’t.

Backers of the measure say that Prop. 17, the “Continuous Coverage Auto Insurance Discount Act,” is needed because it does just that — provides the opportunity for rate discounts to drivers who’ve allowed their insurance coverage to lapse.

State Farm auto insurance is a proud supporter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), whose primary mission is to put an end to drunk driving and support victims of such crimes.  They also fight to put an end to underage drinking.  State Farm is a national sponsor and they share very similar values in educating youth about the dangers of drinking.

“Protecting You/Protecting Me” is a comprehensive program offered through MADD which uses an approach to stop underage drinking through effective, educational efforts to stop the access of alcohol to our youth.  This excellent program is a research-based plan which is nationally recognized nationally.  The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention named it a “Model Program”.

Washington, D.C. — In advance of an expected final vote on financial reform legislation, Consumer Watchdog urged the U.S. Senate to fix provisions that would deregulate insurance oversight by giving the Treasury Department the ability to override state protections on behalf of foreign insurance firms, including laws requiring insurers to hold enough money to pay all claims.
 
“Insurance consumers shouldn’t be collateral damage in the fight to reform Wall Street. We urge the Senate not to make insurance deregulation the unforseen legacy of the financial re-regulation bill,” said Carmen Balber, Washington Director for Consumer Watchdog.
 
The bill would grant the Treasury Department broad new authority to set insurance policy through international agreements, with no consultation with Congress or the states, and use those agreements to unilaterally preempt state laws on behalf of foreign insurance firms seeking to avoid rules on capital, solvency, and other prudential measures.
